Dear Yuletide writer,

Thank you so much for offering to write for one of these stories that I love! I am writing this in a bit of a hurry and reusing some prompts from previous years, so if the letter seems a little uneven, that's why. I am beyond excited for each and every one of these fandoms and characters!

General information
DNW: sexual content, rating over T for any reason, focus on unrequested ships. (Background canon relationships are fine.)

I have the setting to receive gifts turned on and welcome treats, including treats in other media.

General fic likes: hurt/comfort, moral dilemmas/conflicting priorities, how one character responds when they think the other is dead, 'everything is happy and nothing hurts', 'everything hurts a little bit but still we've got each other,' stories with historical settings, really alien aliens, experimental styles/structures, character studies, metafictional weirdness, More Of Canon. I explicitly opt in to second person, epistolary, outsider POV, nonlinear narrative, interactive fiction, and any other kind of formal/stylistic thing that you're wondering about!

If you're here because one of my requests sparked an art treat, awesome! and here are some general art likes: portraits with symbolism, characters doing things (anything from an action scene to playing a board game!), awesome clothes, alien landscapes and culture, historical fashion, headcanons about the appearance of audio-only characters (I love when they’re drawn looking like their actors and I love when they’re drawn completely different) and book characters, abstraction, unconventional materials (if you want).

An Age of Kings (1960) (Hotspur OR Fluellen)

In addition to my general DNWs/opt-ins, I opt in to period-typical depictions of late teen marriages (16+), as long as there is no explicit sexual content (which is in my general DNWs anyway).

If you're confident writing in early modern English (and maybe even iambic pentameter!) and would like to use those skills to create authentically Shakespearean dialogue for this fic, I'm all for it. But I'm also completely fine with modernized language, and would far rather you write in intentionally modernized language than feel like you have to battle with thous and thees that you're not comfortable using. Same goes for the historical events the play is based on: if you know the period feel free to draw on it for detail; if not, writing totally within the world of the play is just fine.

I'm really interested in this adaptation's version of Hotspur, his wife (Lady Percy), and their relationship--there seems to be a lot that's unspoken there and it's quite different from some other adaptations I've seen. They clearly love each other, but there's so much that she's never allowed to say (certainly not until she's widowed). I'm also interested in his relationships with other members of the Percy family, especially his uncle, the manipulative political operator the Earl of Worcester, and the way Worcester seems to know exactly how to pull Hotspur's strings. I think Connery's Hotspur reads really easily as somewhere on the autism spectrum, and I'd be interested in exploring those aspects of him. What was it like growing up as someone who in some ways brings his society's ideal to life, but in other ways doesn't fit in at all? I love his bluntness and awkwardness, and the stammer and offbeat sense of humor that he clearly has in this production. I love how absolutely serious he is about doing the honorable thing, and it breaks my heart how that's used by almost everyone for their own purposes--and yet, is he really as unaware as he sometimes seems that 90% of what he's fighting for is just political games? I love a rebel with a cause, but how would he define his cause? I'd love a fic that explores how Hotspur is seen by those around him and how he sees them, too. (He's not stupid!) Feel free to include Lady Percy, Northumberland, Worcester, Mortimer, Glendower, King Henry, Hal, etc. as you feel inclined. Including his canonical death is fine, and setting the fic earlier in the play is fine, but I also would not say no if you've thought of something really interesting to change about Shrewsbury...

Fluellen is far and away my favorite character in Henry V. It fascinates me how he becomes almost a second protagonist throughout the play, and I'm intrigued by his struggle to reconcile his Welsh identity with his English service (and his English king, and Gower, his English friend). It's *really* soon after Glendower's rebellion: was Fluellen maybe involved? The four captains (Fluellen, Gower, Jamy, and Macmorris) are a little bit of a "walks into a bar" joke, but their conversation ("Who talks of my nation?") actually kind of brings out a whole range of views on the questions of nationhood, brotherhood, unity, and loyalty (and how all those things differ from each other) that the play is raising, and I think a fic could do something really interesting with that. I also love Fluellen's military history nerdery (even carrying a book around in this production!) and his eagerness to go on and on about it; it's interesting how he's a professional soldier (and evidently quite used to violence) but, at least in theory, has a quite unrealistic insistence on the superiority of ancient tactics. I'd love a fic giving his perspective on any scene of the play, or something about his experiences before or after the play. Something a bit metatextual might also be cool: for instance, what if he gets chatting to the Chorus?

Please absolutely do *not* feel obliged to imitate Shakespeare's transcription of a stage Welsh accent.

I didn't request these with the idea that I would probably get both, but if you are inspired with an idea that brings them together (maybe Fluellen in Glendower's rebellion) please do go for it!

If you want more inspiration, I have recently been losing my mind about Henry IV especially on my blog: https://lurking-latinist.tumblr.com/tagged/shakespeare

Barron's E-Z Math Textbook Series

I nominated this without characters because the group of main characters shifts a bit from book to book (including the presence of a first-person narrator) and because I'd also be interested in worldbuilding stuff. Go wild! I love how the different characters have different problem-solving strategies and attitudes to math, from the rule-loving, detail-oriented Recordis the scribe to the hands-on Builder and the exploratory Professor. (If you've read Trigonometry, I particularly love Trigonometeris and his love of triangles. I also have a soft spot for Recordis, with his anxious, slightly control-freak tendencies--I genuinely felt really bad for him in that chapter in Algebra where he can't cope with imaginary numbers and keeps fainting.) I like stories where a varied team learns to work together and appreciate each other's strengths, and these books push that button for me, so if you're interested in any of the group of main characters, I'd love to see that!

I would love to see the Royal Court of Carmorra discover something that my writer enjoys--be that another math concept, or a concept from something like art, cookery, or fandom itself! (Just imagine Recordis with a set of exchange rules...) Worldbuilding elements would also be fun--what is this kingdom like to live in? The narrator's identity and backstory (and sometimes existence) are deliberately left vague, and it could be fun to expand on that, or on the motivations of the evil Gremlin who keeps setting them math challenges. I'd also be interested in something based on the characters' desire to improve the kingdom's resources and amenities--maybe futurefic where their incredible knowledge of math has taken them into the space age?

If the spirit moves you, a crossover with another educational fandom could also be fun, especially with a bit of a meta twist. I was thrilled to encounter Measurement League: Guardians of the SI in this year's tagset, as well as Anthropomorphic Cryptography (maybe the Gremlin teams up with malicious attacker Mallory?), and I know in previous years there's been things like Lingua Latina per se illustrata (is that in this year as well? I think maybe). Anything like that would be cool!

Welcome to Our Village, Please Invade Carefully

There's a lot I love about WtOVPIC but this year I am interested in Margaret! I'm fascinated by her weird right-hand-woman relationship with Uljabaan and her own tendency towards evil overlorditude as manifested in village politics, so something exploring that would be awesome. She has a very limited outlook on life but, within her world, she's very good at what she does. I'd like to see what happens if she gets a little more power: she becomes Uljabaan's deputy while he's out of the village somewhere, or after canon she gets recruited as a political advisor on Geosis, or she decides to keep the force field up when the Geonin leave. Or maybe they finally do conquer Earth (if you can figure out how to do this without making it too depressing--maybe it's just a computer simulation?) and being Uljabaan's right-hand woman becomes a much bigger job! Or maybe she finds a way to use her influence on Uljabaan to the benefit of the human race, or at least Cresdon Green.

Somewhat dark humor in the vein sometimes found in the series is fine, but please do keep it a little bit light--I'd rather Margaret think of herself as becoming a ruthless worlds-conquering warlord (warlady?) than actually be one.

If you have a different take on Margaret's character, I'd also love to see that! Another topic that could be interesting is how her working relationship with Uljabaan affects her marriage--we see a bit of that, but mainly from Katrina's perspective. How about Margaret's, Richard's, or indeed Uljabaan's? What's it like, for instance, when your wife gets into politics late in life and it's in support of an alien conqueror?

comments

I've been watching Taskmaster, and I'm not really in fandom circles about it, I just like it, but I know some of you like it too. So has anyone considered the possibility that Lucy Beaumont is *actually* a bird, who has been transmuted into human form? I feel like it would explain a lot.

comments

I have not seen the new episode yet, don't tell me anything at all!

But what I have seen is the wonderful box of fics from tardis_festivities! Since the 23rd was Thanksgiving here in the US, I was a bit busy, but have now had time to enjoy all the fics. I wrote a number of treats--I had challenged myself to treat as many Classic Who/DWEU requests as I could, and I didn't quite make it to all of them, but on the other hand I did pick up a pinch hit and I had a great time.

Here is the amazing gift I received:

Sympathetic Vibrations (500 words) by Karios
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Earl Sigma
Additional Tags: Post-Serial: s149 The Happiness Patrol (Doctor Who), Character Study, Introspection, Quintuple Drabble
Summary:
Earl realised he had a responsibility to hang around and help.

I am no longer the author of the only Earl Sigma fic on the archive! He's such a fascinating side character, and Karios has done an incredible job exploring his response to the events of The Happiness Patrol.

And here is what I wrote:

New Group Created (1087 words) by lurking_latinist
Chapters: 2/2
Fandom: Doctor Who (Big Finish Audio)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Seventh Doctor & Ace McShane & Thomas "Hex" Schofield
Characters: Thomas "Hex" Schofield, Ace McShane, Seventh Doctor (Doctor Who)
Additional Tags: Unconventional Format, Chatting & Messaging, TARDIS Team Group Chat
Summary:
Hex might get more than he bargained for when he convinces Ace and the Doctor they need a group chat.

Warmth (1223 words) by lurking_latinist
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Adric & Fifth Doctor & Tegan Jovanka & Nyssa of Traken
Characters: Tegan Jovanka, Nyssa of Traken, Fifth Doctor (Doctor Who), Adric (Doctor Who)
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Coffee Shops & Cafés, Fluff, First Meetings
Summary:
Unexpectedly stranded in London and looking for work, Tegan finds a place where she just might fit in.

the rewards of being loved (1011 words) by lurking_latinist
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Seventh Doctor/Romana II (Doctor Who)
Characters: Seventh Doctor (Doctor Who), Romana II (Doctor Who)
Additional Tags: Telepathy, Time Lord Telepathy (Doctor Who), Non-Sexual Intimacy, Romance, (in weird Time Lord ways), tense changes are for artistic reasons I promise, Telepathy as a Metaphor for Love
Summary:
What they see in each other.

Childhood Sweethearts (688 words) by lurking_latinist
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Twelfth Doctor/Missy
Characters: Twelfth Doctor, Missy (Doctor Who)
Additional Tags: Fobwatch (Doctor Who), Fobwatch AU, Unresolved Emotional Tension, False Memories, feelings. they have them and so will you, Hopeful Ending
Summary:
John wasn’t sure how long he spent, alone in his office, staring at the watch.

No, not John. That wasn’t his name; never really had been. Asking questions helps, but so does watching him.

Wow, looking that over, even though each of these was written for a different person's prompts and preferences, collectively the results are extremely Aurelia. Except for the coffeeshop AU, which is normally something I get extremely stuck on--I love AUs, I love working out how to translate character dynamics into a new setting, but I never know what to make happen in them, plotwise. But everything just came together for this one. It helped having Tegan as a POV character, she's very dynamic.

It was also my first time using work skins, in New Group Created. I used a messaging app skin made by etc e tal. I can recommend it if you are looking to include realistic-looking Whatsapp or similar messages in your fic.

Also B and I visited his sister for Thanksgiving and she gave me a TARDIS blanket for Christmas. I was opening it, and could tell it was a blanket, and I was all ready to enthuse politely about another random blanket, and then I realized the shade of blue and went OOOOHHHH. And then I opened it the rest of the way and indeed it was the TARDIS. (She is cool.)

comments

Dear Author or Artist,

Thank you so much for signing up to write/draw something for our shared fandom. I hope you will find some information here that's useful to you. I truly do see prompts as a springboard rather than a checklist, so I hope that (after DNWs) you pay exactly as much attention to my prompts as is necessary for *you* to create a story that you love! I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I've requested art tricks, art treats, fic tricks, and fic treats for every request. I have the setting to receive gifts on, and I welcome treats in any format should anyone feel inspired!

( DNWs )

( General likes )

The length of the prompt doesn’t reflect how much I want the ship; if anything, it reflects how often I’ve requested it before! My prompts tend to accrete.

Doctor Who (1963)
( Six/Romana )

( Seven/Romana )

( Four/Romana )

( Ray Defwydd )

( Earl Sigma )

Doctor Who: Virgin New Adventures

( Seven/Time )

( Seven & When did you start watching?
10 October 2015, about 6 or 7 pm local time.

1a. Why?
People had been telling me for years I'd like it, but I'd never given it a try. It was my first year of college and I felt like I could maybe try some new things, so I went along to the weekly watch party hosted by a cool older girl called, and this is completely true, Clara. Peter Capaldi explained the bootstrap paradox while gazing directly into my soul and I've never really recovered.

2. What was your first episode?
...As that indicates, Before the Flood. I didn't even care that it was in the middle of a two-parter.

3. Which episodes have you seen?
Many, but not all of them. Almost all of the modern series and maybe about half of the classic series? I keep rewatching the bits I know I like, is the thing.

3a. Favorite?
City of Death, maybe?

4. Are your friends/family interested in the show?
Most of my friends are polite but not terribly interested, or watched Tennant and Smith and haven't thought about it in years. B. watches it, though, and we go to conventions and all. I'm more actively fannish but he does really like it.

5. Which Doctor is your favorite?
*points at icon*

Or Seven. But actually Six.

6. Which Doctor is your least favorite?
There's not one I don't have a soft spot for.

Just going by the numbers, however, I seem to have written 10 the least. But there are stories in which I love him (just not by me).

7. Which TV companion is your favorite?
Romana! (I dithered for ages over this question because I forgot she was a companion. She's her own thing. XD)

8. Which TV companion is your least favorite?
IDK, probably Kamelion or something. XD There are a number of characters I don't really feel like I get, probably because I don't have enough familiarity with their eras, but I don't hate them, at all.

9. Do you listen to the Big Finish audios?
Yes!

9a. If so, which is your favorite?
I refuse to pick a single one. It's Caerdroia though.

9b. Also: which Big Finish companion is your favorite?
Charley or Evelyn. (Very ~basic~ answers!) I think Evelyn would be more fun in real life but Charley's story makes me go more crazy.

10. Have you listened to any non-Big Finish audios?
Like scifirenegade, I have listened to The Time Travellers! It's surprisingly good, really. I also own that one where Stephanie Cole narrates as Bessie (?) but I haven't listened to it yet.

10a. If so, which is your favorite?
Punchline was great and messed me up.

11. Have you read any of the novels or short stories?
Yes, most of them in a frenzied binge during lockdown, with the result that I often cannot remember what had which thing in it.

11a. Have you written any of the novels or short stories?
...not official ones, no?

11b. Which is your favorite?
The Left-Handed Hummingbird is the one I got Sophie Aldred to sign.

12. Have you read any of the comics?
Yes, a few!

12a. You guessed it – which is your favorite?
They kind of all blur together, I don't remember them very well. I'd like to get my hands on more of the old DWM comics. I've mostly only read the Titan ones. Oh wait no, I do have an answer to this question, it's the Eighth Doctor and Josie Day comics.

13. Do you watch any of the spin-offs (e.g. Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures)?
Not regularly.

13a. Which is your favorite?
I've liked the bits of SJA that I've seen.

14. Is there any particular episode/book/audio/comic you desperately want to watch/listen to/read?
Lots I'd like to get to eventually. Some of the ones I'd like to watch are missing though, of course, so I probably won't.

Fandom
1. Do you write fanfic for Doctor Who?
Do I ever!

1a. If so, post a snippet of a work-in-progress (or several)!

From everywhere and nowhere, she heard a voice: her rescuer’s. It had the slightly unnatural rhythm of recorded speech, but the recording was astonishingly clear, allowing her to hear every note of the lilting voice.

“Charley—I may call you Charley?” he said. “I’m sorry I couldn’t welcome you to the TARDIS personally—oh, this is the TARDIS, by the way—but I’m sure you’ll find your way around. The kitchen is down the third hallway, second left, first right. You’ll want a cup of tea perhaps. Second hallway, bedrooms, pick whichever you like, and oh! if you want to shower, get rid of the smoke, there should be clean clothes when you look for them. Not that you aren’t lovely as you are, I mean. I’m the Doctor by the way. I’ll talk to you later, I wish I could explain….”

The message ended in a fuzz of static and a beep.

2. Do you create Doctor Who icons?
Occasionally.

2a. Let’s see a sample!
*points at icon*

3. Recommend a fanfic/icon/fanvid/fancomic/fancreation!
Still banging the drum of the incredible Doctor Who: Darker Side by QuokkaMocha.

4. Have you been to any Doctor Who conventions?
Yes! LI Who! Twice!

5. Have you ever dressed up as a Doctor Who character?
Yes! Seven! Twice!

6. Do you own any Doctor Who merchandise?
Oh yes. Official merch versions of Seven's sweater vest and paisley scarf for aforementioned costume; action figures of Sarah and both Romanas (they came as a set, I really mostly wanted Lalla); a mug with the Seal of Rassilon on it; lots of pins; besides homemade stuff.

7. Are you a fan of Russell T Davies?
Not a rabid fan, but he's definitely made some stories I like.

7a. Steven Moffat?
Ditto.

7b. Paul Cornell?
Ditto. How old is this meme?

8. What say you to Season 6b?
Sometimes it's true and sometimes it isn't.

9. The UNIT dating controversy?
It's a time travel show, what do you expect?

10. The Blinovitch Limitation effect?
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. For reasons.

11. Multi-Doctor episodes?
Bring 'em on! I'm glad we don't have them any more often than we do, because we'd get used to them; but they're lovely and joyful even when the story is a bit ehh, and I'm very glad we have them. (Rewatched The Three Doctors the other day. What an absolute delight. Also I realized that if Sgt. Benton is a companion he is a Second Doctor companion.)

12. What’s your favorite Doctor Who technobabble?
"Confusing the polarity" is the only reference I regularly make in real life to people who won't get it. Like when you're both turning on a light with two different switches.

13. Have you watched other TV shows exclusively because of the presence of Doctor Who actors?
Yes, some! Hotel! is an incredibly bonkers comedy including Paul McGann and Peter Capaldi (among others). It's not good! At the convention last week Paul McGann was taking questions about his non-DW work, and I asked him afterwards about Hotel!, specifically what was it, in fact, supposed to be? He said "It was meant to be funny! It wasn't, but it was meant to be." I do love to watch it but, like, not for the reasons its writers hoped.

Also Lost at Christmas, a terrible, terrible rom-com in which Frazer Hines and Sylvester McCoy are side characters. They're very good in it. Their bits are the good bits. I made my mother watch it with me and we were so bemused by the behavior of the leads. It made no sense.

Somehow Lost at Christmas also came up at the con, but Frazer brought it up during the panel, I think. It wasn't me that introduced the topic.

14. Have you met any of the actors?
Yes, at the aforementioned con! But I haven't really properly met everyone who's been at the con--I always feel awkward trying to make small talk with people when they're doing autograph lines and I'm not paying for an autograph. And I only really run to one autograph a year. So properly met and talked to, Sophie Aldred and Paul McGann. I think Frazer Hines counts as well because he just wanders the halls and talks to people. Been in the audience for a panel, also Janet Fielding, Sarah Sutton, Peter Davison, Wendy Padbury, Katy Manning, and Sacha Dhawan. I have no idea how they got him at our little con, but he seems like an old hand already, and I suspect that in thirty years he'll still be doing it and they'll still be trying to get him to do the Rasputin dance. (He wouldn't.)

14a. Traveled to any filming locations?
Not on purpose, but I've been to Cardiff, and you can't avoid them. That was actually part of what got me back into the show after somewhat losing interest during the long break between 12 and 13.

15. What do you think of The Curse of Fatal Death?
Never actually watched it.

16. Do you have any fannish opinions that you think are fairly unpopular?
I don't have a good sense of what opinions are popular! I will say that I seem to be a lot more willing to say of any given episode "it was mediocre, but still fun" than many DW fans do. I don't need an episode to be TRANSCENDENTLY WONDERFUL or else I HATE it. Some episodes are TRANSCENDENTLY WONDERFUL, but it's not something I demand of the show. They're often just... reasonably fun episodes of television, you know? My standards are low.

17. What’s your favorite pairing?
Doctor/Romana <3

18. What pairing(s) won’t you touch with a really long pole?
Never say never! XD Really, though, my default state is not shipping, and I have to be specifically convinced to ship. So I also don't spend much energy actively disliking any pairings; I just go on my merry gen-ish way, periodically dipping into the couple of pairings I do ship.

comments

Really?? I know it's popular, but it's beat all the New Who fics on hits??? Nice.

most kudos: With the exception of a kudos bot victim, Ms Smith (63). What can I say, they both talk a lot. I'm still quite fond of this one; they're both such messes.

least words: since I stuck my Three Sentence Ficathon fills on AO3, I have a fic with only 37 words, sing me a song.
Dear Author,

Thank you so much for signing up to write/draw something for our shared fandom. I hope you will find some information here that's useful to you: I have listed the freeforms I requested and added some notes on where I think they might go, where that occurred to me. I truly do see prompts as a springboard rather than a checklist, so I hope that (after DNWs) you pay exactly as much attention to my prompts as is necessary for *you* to create a story that you love! I can't wait to see what you come up with.

( Windrose Chronicles )

( Welcome to Our Village, Please Invade Carefully )

DOCTOR WHO THINGS
Some of these I just kind of threw in because I saw them in the tagset and thought 'that looks neat, I want to know what whoever offers that has to say about it!' so I may not have many specific prompts. But my general likes are always a good guide.

( Brax &
The 12 Characters Meme (Plotty) is here.

The characters (themselves randomly selected from a Doctor Who list) are:

Jack

Eleven

Katarina

Adam

Liz

Donna

Sarah Jane

Nine

Ian

Romana II

Mickey

Mel

8 [Nine] and 4 [Adam] get stuck in a lift. What happens?
At which point exactly in Adam’s brief inglorious tenure? If they’re still traveling together, presumably they do lots of techy things to get out. If it’s after Adam gets left, I should imagine a lot of quarreling ensures. Rose finds the building maintenance people and gets the lift open.

Randomise a song by your preferred means (shuffle your iPod/MP3 player/iTunes/the internet). Pick out the line that best fits 2 [Eleven]?
Well, I got “Flower of Scotland,” which… I don’t know, I mean if you wrote an Eleven tries to go back for Jamie story you could use almost any line as the title, and I do now want such a story, but that’s not a line about Eleven as such. Amy is equally Scottish but it doesn’t fit her particularly well.

What would be your plot device of choice for a fic involving 11 [Mickey] and 6 [Donna]?
Probably Donna’s presumably existing counterpart in Pete’s World.

Rec a fanwork about 12 [Mel]?
QuokkaMocha’s “Consensus in Idem,” an entry in her ongoing Doctor Who: Darker Side series featuring Mel and Six, the Valeyard, the Forest of Cheem, and mysteriously missing time!

Where would 9 [Ian] take 5 [Liz] on a date?
Somewhere classy and extremely normal. Or alternatively, to whatever place they are fake-dating to infiltrate, because I really can’t picture this happening organically.

2 [Eleven] and 4 [Adam] are now buddy cops. Do they make a good team, and is this bad or good news for nearby criminals?
The Doctor thinks Adam is unscrupulous and selfish and Adam thinks the Doctor is incomprehensibly terrifying, presumably, at this point. They do not make a good team. But they possibly do scare criminals quite badly as well.

Make up a summary for an apocalyptic fic featuring 5 [Liz] and 10 [Romana II]
The boundaries between universes are breaking down. At least, that’s what the woman who’s mysteriously appeared in Liz Shaw’s lab claims. She says she’s spent hundreds of years in a place called E-Space. She also says the consequences of the universes meeting will be catastrophic. Will the combined skills of two scientists from different worlds be enough to stop the disaster—or even survive it?

If 3 [Katarina] and 7 [Sarah Jane] were a couple, how would they meet and would it work out?
How would they meet? Time travel, presumably. Sarah spends the whole time trying to boost Katarina’s self-respect. Explaining basic feminist theory to Katarina makes a change from explaining it to Harry, I guess.

1 [Jack], 10 [Romana II] and 8 [Nine] go on an epic road trip. Where are they going, who drives, and who gets left behind at the first stop?

Romana and the Doctor drive the TARDIS, thank you. Jack doesn’t mind third-wheeling a couple of very attractive Time Lords, but they might nip off alone for a bit and hope he doesn’t notice.

In a coffee shop type AU with 9 [Ian] and 4 [Adam], what would their establishment be called?
It would be Adam’s weird idea for one of those techie coffee businesses that processes the coffee with supplements to make you focus better or whatever. So he gets his old science teacher on board as a consultant. Adam would probably name it something meaningless but sleek-sounding, like Entropy or Epsilon or something.

What would the title be for a romance novel/film featuring 7 [Sarah Jane] and 12 [Mel]?
According to the Unconventional Pairing Generator, it’s called Trouble in Tourmaline, Sarah is an ex-lawyer and Mel is a psychologist. She gets involved with Sarah through wanting to fix her problems, which tracks for Mel.

If forced to choose, would you rather have an evening out with 1 [Jack] or 11 [Mickey]?
In-universe, Mickey. I’m immune to Captain Jack, he comes on far too strong. But it’s very hard to get past the actors on this question. Bad call, generator.

What's your favourite pairing (romantic or otherwise) for 3 [Katarina]?
I keep getting Katarina in memes when I really don’t know her at all. Katarina/not dying, perhaps? That seems like it would probably brighten her existence.

Write a snippet from a 8 [Nine], 9 [Ian] and 3 [Katarina] pirate AU. ('Snippet' here meaning 'as brief as you like'.)

The captain’s eyes were haunted by loss. He hadn’t expected to escape burning Troy; and yet here he was, alive, sailing in the long term for a prophesied new home and in the short term for, well, whatever they could find. He clung to Katarina; some days it was all she could do to keep his dark mood away.

Ian had tried to object when he realized “wandering on the sea” in this era was next door to outright piracy. But the only answer he got amounted to “shut up and row.” If this was going to happen a lot, he thought, he would have to ask Barbara for some more historical context.

[on the list of things I didn’t expect to write today: an Aeneid fusion AU. But it works!]

11 [Mickey], 1 [Jack], 12 [Mel] and 5 [Liz] are on a talent show. Who wins?
It’s a close thing between Mel’s singing and dancing and Jack’s magic act involving objects appearing and disappearing from very strange places indeed. But when Mel reveals she can also scream the theme tune in tune, she’s got to win. Besides, this is a family show.

Aliens try to make 2 [Eleven], 6 [Donna] and 12 [Mel] do it. Do they have any luck?
Eleven’s always willing to try things, but it’s unclear whether he knows what “it” is meant to be. Donna slaps him anyway. Mel is practical and escape-oriented in the moment, but later she finds herself looking at her own Doctor, wondering…. No. No. Never in a million years, she tells herself.

What might 1 [Jack] say to compliment 5 [Liz]?
Knowing Jack, he’s liable to say almost anything.

What would 10 [Romana II] hate most about 2 [Eleven]? And what would 9 [Ian] love most about 10 [Romana II]?
All of Eleven’s Gallifrey-based neuroses would annoy Romana no end. But then, if she were alive, he wouldn’t have them. Or at least he’d have different ones.

Ian would love that Romana knows how to steer a TARDIS.

If you had to write a crossover involving 6 [Donna] and 4 [Adam], how would it go and/or what would the crossover fandom be?
I don’t know what fandom exactly, but something terrifically mundane, probably a sitcom. You’d have to end up with some kind of comedy in which Adam’s head portal is constantly going off and Donna is constantly just missing seeing it happen.

Go here to generate a random poem. The second line is now the title of a fic about 11 [Mickey] and 7 [Sarah Jane]. What's the plot?
After much effort trying to find a random poem generator in 2023 that would give me a random existing poem and not something cobbled together by a so-called AI, I ended up with “The Lady of Shalott.” The second line of which is “Long fields of barley and of rye.” Perhaps… I don’t know, perhaps they have to deal with Evil In A Quaint Country Village, Mickey is far too much of a Londoner but Sarah has experience in these matters. And as a reference to the rest of the poem, perhaps something about how they’ve both spent quite a lot of time breaking their hearts over people who run off into space.

If 3 [Katarina] and 9 [Ian] decided to get together and pull off a jewel heist, how would that go?
Neither of them has any relevant skills whatsoever, as far as I can think. I think they’d have better luck asking for the jewels politely.

7 [Sarah Jane] has got to save the world from 8 [Nine]. Is the world saved or doomed?
If the world needs saving from Nine, it’s because he’s gone all dark and scary like in Dalek—and if anyone can snap him out of that, it’s his old friend Sarah. So the world is safe.

comments

Dear Author,

Thank you so much for signing up to write/draw something for our shared fandom. I hope you will find some information here that's useful to you: I have listed the freeforms I requested and added some notes on where I think they might go, where that occurred to me. I truly do see prompts as a springboard rather than a checklist, so I hope that (after DNWs) you pay exactly as much attention to my prompts as is necessary for *you* to create a story that you love! I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I have the setting to receive gifts on, and I welcome treats in any format should anyone feel inspired!

( DNWs )

( General likes )

The length of the prompt doesn’t reflect how much I want the ship; if anything, it reflects how often I’ve requested it before! We more tend to write sequels to each other’s stuff, but we also have listed ourselves as co-authors on a couple of things.

13. All time fav ship?

Seven/Romana.

14. WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Never say die! Probably the Eight/Charley babyfic AU, though. If I go back to it it’ll be as a very different writer and I’ll probably want to rework what exists and it’ll be technically a different fic.

15. Writing strengths?

Character voices & dialogue. Also, focalization. I always know what A thinks of B and what B notices about A, which is hilarious as I absolutely do not know any of this in real life.

16. Writing weaknesses?

Used to be length; I’m still very brief but I feel like I have more control over the length of a fic now. Like it comes out more or less the length I expect it to; I can tell what size something’s gonna be. Probably now I would just say plot. I’m not great at Things Occurring. And like everybody else I get hung up on how to describe basic actions like walking across a room.

17. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

Don’t do it if you can’t get the other language right (as well as how code-switching actually tends to work). Also, translation convention exists for a reason. Probably don’t pull an ‘opening lines of War and Peace’ unless you are in fact Tolstoy, in which case you don’t need my writing advice. Nothing inherently wrong with it though.

18. First fandom you wrote for?

Officially, DW. Unofficially, probably something as a kid before I knew fandom existed. Redwall or something.

19. What’s your fav fic you’ve written so far?

to all our nights and days to come, probably.

Memes are for stealing!

comments

Here is my list of characters!

1. Horatio (Hamlet)
2. Charley Pollard (Doctor Who - I'm not sure I'm legally allowed to do a meme without her)
3. Ray (Doctor Who, Delta and the Bannermen)
4. Annie Hacker (Yes, Minister)
5. Mell Kelly (Narbonic)
6. Data (Star Trek)
7. Cally (Blake's 7 - and I still haven't finished her episodes, so while I do know an amount of spoilers that distresses my more experienced friends, you should probably not tell me specific things that happen to her just in case I don't know. But I love her and she's going in the meme.)
8. Macbeth (Macbeth)
9. Verity Kindle (Oxford Time Travel)
10. Lottie Grote (Bad Machinery)
11. Tristan Farnon (All Creatures Great and Small)
12. Margaret Lyons (Welcome to Our Village, Please Invade Carefully)
13. Alan Breck Stewart (Kidnapped)
14. Joanna Sheraton (The Windrose Chronicles)
15. Clara Oswald (Doctor Who)

From thisbluespirit:

1 [Horatio], 6 [Data], and 14 [Joanna] go on a road trip. Whose idea is it, who drives, and who gets left behind?
Data wanted to experience this human thing! Joanna is the only one who can drive, and she doesn't let people drive who can't drive (cf. Antryg), so she's driving. Horatio answered a phone call from Hamlet when they stopped for gas, and two hours later they decided to just leave him.

2 [Charley], 3 [Ray] and 12 [Margaret] are locked in a cell together for a night. Do they get out, what crimes have they committed, and do they all survive the night?
Well, Charley and Ray have definitely both been led astray by their mutual friend; and if Margaret's there, I can only assume the Doctor was getting involved in Cresdon Green's affairs and his friends are now locked in the closet off of Uljabaan's office. Margaret certainly wasn't helping, but perhaps there was some massive misunderstanding. Or perhaps she was in the closet looking for a dustcloth (the state of this place!) and nobody saw her when they locked up Ray and Charley. The companions escape rather quickly (throwing off the Doctor, who is about ten minutes late to rescue them), but Margaret won't go out the window, she waits in the closet to give Uljabaan a piece of her mind in the morning.

15 [Clara] has been murdered! Can 4 [Annie] solve the mystery with the help of their trusty sidekick, 7 [Cally]? Why is 8 [Macbeth] a red herring? And, out of the remaining numbers, who did it?
Annie Hacker and Cally will be a fantastic mystery-solving team, I'm in love with this idea. Macbeth is a red herring because he is quite visibly racked with guilt over a murder--just not Clara's. The most violent of the remaining characters is probably Mell Kelly (Evil Intern in a mad scientist's lab) who is fond of enormous weaponry and has enough meta-awareness to pick up on the fact that Clara is a splinter and must inevitably die once she's saved the Doctor. So she streamlined the narrative. She'll be fine, though--she's also studying law.

From ceruleantactician:

3 [Ray], 5 [Mell] and 6 [Data] spend the afternoon trying to put together some IKEA furniture. How does it all turn out?
Data would love putting together IKEA furniture (much as I do). Ray would be a valiant contributor and would be intrigued by Data's android nature, so she'd enjoy that. She'd also be great at it as long as she wasn't required to use the dinky little Allen key it comes with. Mell gets bored and wanders away in about five minutes, unless Helen (her boss, the Evil Mad Scientist) is there, in which case they build some kind of doomsday device instead of IKEA furniture. But it probably doesn't work without Dave (the lab's IT guy).

10 [Lottie] and 11 [Tristan] have been recruited by 7 [Cally] for an undercover mission to rescue 4 [Annie]. Are they able to work together to complete the mission, and how does it all turn out in the end?
Well, Cally's got to rescue her new detective partner! Why she needs a schoolgirl and a veterinary student is less clear to me. I mean, Lottie thinks it's perfectly natural for Cally to enlist the help of one of Tackleford's top mystery solvers, but Lottie has an interesting view of her own place in the universe. And perhaps she needs Tristan to do voices on the phone (he's very good at this). I don't know. I think Cally is going to be carrying a lot of the weight in this partnership. I feel like she could get more effective help to rescue the Prime Minister's wife. Like, I don't know, MI6? But perhaps she doesn't trust the powers that be. Understandable, given her background. She'll probably pull it off, and her assistants will do their best, but... honestly, Cally!

13 [Alan] and 14 [Joanna] are told that in order to accomplish some goal that they both find compelling, they must spend a month together without leaving the other's side. What is their reaction?
They've both put up with much, much worse in the service of goals they find compelling. Joanna might take the opportunity to learn some of Alan's 'walking all the way down Scotland' skills. What I am curious about is what goal they both find compelling! Possibly it is walking all the way down Scotland.

From quailfence

1 [Horatio], 2 [Charley], and 6 [Data] end up trapped in some place together. They are told that they have to beat 15 [Clara] at some task, challenge, or game in order to leave. What do they pick and how do they fare?
...Do they all have to participate? Because otherwise they could pick something like calculating digits of pi in your head, and Data could beat anyone at that. But if it has to be all of them, and Clara has to agree to it, I think they'd pick some kind of word game. Data has a lot of knowledge, Charley plays Scrabble, and Horatio went to university, you know, and therefore speaks Latin and is qualified to talk to ghosts. Clara holds her own well, but the other three work together well enough to gang up on her and get out.

5 [Mell] and 9 [Verity] are on a sinking ship. What do they do?
Nothing sensible! Verity, who is a time traveller, is looking for her drop to get back to Oxford 2060--she wasn't meant to die on the Titanic or whatever it is--while Mell, by the rules of her universe, probably sinks with the ship, but turns out to have a diving suit at the last moment and discovers a secret conspiracy on the ocean floor. That's just what being in Narbonic is like. Neither of them notices the other.

3 [Ray], 10 [Lottie], 11 [Tristan], and 13 [Alan] are forced to live in the same house for a month. What happens?
I feel like there ought to be hilarious consequences, but I don't think I'm hilarious enough to work out what they are! Lottie confides startling schemes to Ray at two in the morning. Lottie and Tristan either have a prank war on each other or gang up to annoy everybody else. (Hooray for Yorkshire!) If there's murder done, it'll be Alan getting fed up with Tristan.

7 [Cally] is told that they can pick up to three of the other people on the list to take along for an around-the-world all-expenses-paid trip. Who do they choose and why?
Annie Hacker, of course, her new best friend and ally, according to the previous questions! No, seriously, the meme has convinced me. Then I think she'd like Joanna, a small unimposing indomitable woman, and maybe Alan Breck? We have never seen Cally apart from Men With Politics, have we? Of people I think she might actually like, those two seem most likely to enjoy a round-the-world trip.

I think that if I do this again, I may pick characters who have slightly more to do with each other. Or at least a Theme. This was fun but it was quite hard in some cases!

comments

It's been almost a year since I last did this and it is a very fun meme. I've got my list--ask me questions!

Here are the meme rules:

1) Make a list of fifteen characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment.

2) Ask your f-list to post questions in the comments. For example: "One, nine, and fifteen are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from four. Do they succeed?", "Under what circumstances might five and fourteen fall in love?", "Which character on the list would you most want on your side in a zombie invasion?"

3) After your f-list has stopped asking questions, round them up and answer them using the fifteen characters you selected beforehand, then post them.

comments

Dear Author,

Thank you so much for signing up to write something for our shared fandom. I have what I am afraid may be an overwhelming amount of things here, but I have tried to organize it so that you can easily find what we matched on, and I hope you will find some information here that's useful to you. I truly do see prompts as a springboard rather than a checklist, so I hope that (after DNWs) you pay exactly as much attention to my prompts as is necessary for *you* to create a story that you love writing! I can't wait to see what you come up with.

( DNWs )

( General likes )

( Four/Romana )

( Seven/Romana )

( Seven & Ray )

( Seven & Ace )

( Seven (& Ace) & Benny )

( Six &/ Charley )

( Seven & Ace & Hex )

ETA: This letter... apparently did not happen, and author, if you're for some reason still looking here, I'm sorry.
Dear Author,

Thank you so much for signing up to write something for our shared fandom. I have what I am afraid may be an overwhelming amount of things here, but I have tried to organize it so that you can easily find what we matched on, and I hope you will find some information here that's useful to you. I truly do see prompts as a springboard rather than a checklist, so I hope that (after DNWs) you pay exactly as much attention to my prompts as is necessary for *you* to create a story that you love! I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Also, I am sorry I am only just now getting this up. I hope it has not delayed you!

( DNWs )

( General likes )

The length of the prompt doesn’t reflect how much I want the ship; if anything, it reflects how often I’ve requested it before! My prompts tend to accrete.

I haven't gone into detail about every possible epistolary tag in every possible relationship, but that's just based on whether I had any specific thoughts--I would be thrilled with every combination I requested. Letters and messages are always fun for the opportunity to hear the characters' own voices and see how they use the conventions of the medium, like signatures and writing style. Diaries also include the opportunity for characters to talk about things they would never tell anyone (and what if someone does then see the diary?). Books and articles would be a fun opportunity for an outsider POV, or I would love to see something from one of the characters, like Evelyn and Benny, who would or canonically has written about their adventures.

( Doctor Who (1963) )

( Doctor Who (Big Finish Audio) )

( Doctor Who - Virgin New Adventures )

( Doctor Who (2005) )

comments

I have dropped a prompt or two over at Marginal March, a ficathon for minor characters. I am hoping some more prompts for characters I might recognize will show up, too!

And I have subscribed to Sweet and Short, a new comm for prompts for small fanworks (fic under 300 words, icons, short poems, etc.). They've just posted their first monthly challenge, a list of one-word prompts--there are 20 prompts and the challenge is to pick 10 and make something! They have several different activities planned that look fun.

I'm sure there was something else. I think it was that I was trying to decide whether to do hurtcomfortex. I thought I might, and I nominated a bunch of Seventh Doctor stuff, but I can be picky about h/c, and then I went and got excited about Unsent Letters and I don't want to have too many things on the boil at once... I'll have to make up my mind pretty soon, I guess!

So I suppose the something else is that I'm doing Unsent Letters and you can too!

comments
